The ongoing saga of the CFMEU's administration and the battle for reform in its Victorian branch has taken a dramatic turn. Michael Crosby, the new administrator, has laid bare the extent of the problems and the challenges he faces in his mission to overhaul the union.
In a bold and frank interview, Crosby has not held back, highlighting the broken culture within the Victorian arm and the interference of former bosses, particularly John Setka and Joe Myles. He believes that until these individuals are removed from the equation, the union will remain in a state of paralysis.
"The culture in Victoria is still broken, and it's holding back progress across the country. We can't move forward until we address this systemic issue," Crosby stated.
One of the key concerns is the involvement of organized crime and corruption within the construction industry. Crosby believes that without industry-wide regulation, the problem will persist, and criminal gangs will continue to exploit the system.
"It's a vicious cycle. We can reform the union, but if the industry remains a hotbed for criminal activity, it's an uphill battle. The government needs to step up and address this issue head-on," he added.
The comments from Crosby put him at odds with Premier Jacinta Allan, who has maintained that her government's clean-up efforts have been successful. However, Crosby's perspective, backed by Victoria Police, paints a different picture, highlighting the need for urgent action.
"I think what many people don't realize is that this is not just about the union. It's about the industry as a whole and the impact it has on the community. We're talking about organized crime and the potential for serious harm. It's a complex issue that requires a comprehensive solution," Crosby explained.
The administrator's plans include legal action against serving and former CFMEU officials who are obstructing the reform process. He aims to expel Setka, Myles, and others, preventing them from regaining power and influencing the union's future.
"I'm determined to see this through. The future of the CFMEU and the industry depends on it. We can't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch. It's time for a fresh start, and I'm committed to making that happen," Crosby concluded.
The battle for the soul of the CFMEU continues, and with it, the future of the construction industry hangs in the balance.
